Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL)

Alberta uses a 3-stage GDL system before a full Class 5.

  • Class 7 (learner): minimum age 14, must hold for at least 1 year before Class 5 road test.
  • Class 7 may not drive between midnight and 5:00 a.m.
  • Number of passengers limited to seat-belt count; supervising driver in front seat.
  • Class 5-GDL (probationary): minimum 2 years of GDL after passing the basic road test.
  • Full Class 5: complete the advanced road test after at least 2 years GDL with no suspensions in the last year.
  • Zero alcohol tolerance for all GDL drivers.

Demerit points

Demerits build up for traffic convictions and lead to suspension.

  • Fully licensed driver: suspended at 15 demerits.
  • GDL driver (Class 7 or Class 5-GDL): suspended at 8 demerits.
  • Demerits stay on your record for 2 years from the conviction date.
  • Not wearing a seat belt = 2 demerits.

Medical & collision reporting

What you must report and to whom.

  • The driver is responsible for reporting any medical condition or change in health that may affect driving.
  • Report any collision to police if anyone is injured/killed, or combined damage is over $1000.
  • A road test is refused if the vehicle is not mechanically safe.
